Case study: A first-of-its-kind clean energy microgrid for the U.S. Navy and KIUC

In March 2021, AES completed a first-of-its-kind clean energy microgrid for the Department of Defense (DoD). Our solution provided a remote Navy base with multiple days of backup power capability, reduced its reliance on diesel shipments, and offered black start functionality, which enables the grid to safely restart after a shutdown without any external electricity source. AES addressed the critical need for energy resiliency, security and independence to ensure 24/7 mission readiness for the DoD, the largest consumer of energy in the US and largest consumer of petroleum in the world.
