Together, we are transforming how we power California.
California has one of the most ambitious renewable energy goals in the country, committing to 100% clean power by 2045, and is implementing some of the most innovative, ambitious technologies to get there.
In California, we recognize the need for advanced technology to create a modernized, reliable grid. That’s why we’ve placed an increased focus on battery energy storage, both as standalone facilities and paired with wind and solar resources in hybrid solutions. The Alamitos Battery Energy Storage System, the world’s first standalone energy storage system for local capacity, was inaugurated in 2021 and showcases our innovation in storage solutions.
As we continue to operate and innovate in the state, we will consistently provide clean and reliable energy, create local jobs, and invest in non-profits, education, and local businesses. At the same time, we will listen to our customers to co-create solutions that meet California's evolving energy needs.

Increasing the delivery of reliable and sustainable energy for Southern California with standalone energy storage
In December 2020, AES completed the Alamitos Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Long Beach, California, one of the world's largest battery storage systems in operation today. Powered by Fluence, AES' joint venture with Siemens, the system is a standalone energy storage facility for local capacity, providing up to 400 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy to provide greener, smarter, and more reliable power to Southern California Edison (SCE) customers while also helping California meet its sustainability goal of 100 percent carbon-free energy by 2045.
The Alamitos BESS represents the first time in history a standalone battery energy storage system was specifically procured to replace a natural gas peaker plant in the U.S and the world’s first grid-scale energy storage system to receive a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), demonstrating the value of energy storage in creating a clean, reliable and dependable grid.

Partner: Fluence Southern California Edison
Impact:
- The energy storage facility in Long Beach will provide up to 400 MWh of local energy to ensure power flexibility and reliability for Southern California Edison (SCE) customers while helping the state meet its aggressive target of 100 percent clean energy by 2045.
- Provide power during peak demand to 22,000 local homes
"With the commissioning of the Alamitos BESS, the State of California moves closer to its goal of a more sustainable and reliable energy future. AES is proud to work together with Southern California Edison to accelerate the adoption of this greener, smarter energy technology," said Mark Miller, AES Market Business Leader for California and AES Southland General Manager.

Landowners
We present landowners with new opportunities to capitalize on the value of their land while retaining ownership throughout the project life cycle. For many, this is a welcome complement to current land use and an opportunity to diversify their land investment while hedging against volatile commodity prices. For others, our projects offer an income stream and land-use option where none otherwise existed.
Our teams and landowners work together, in partnership, from the beginning stages of site discussions, through permitting, construction, and operation. The landowner relationship with AES begins early, is built on trust and open communication, ensuring a beneficial partnership for everyone.
