Energy Storage in Pennsylvania

Hoytdale Energy Storage

in development

The Hoytdale project is transforming a legacy mine site in Big Beaver Borough into a clean energy infrastructure asset that will strengthen grid reliability across Western Pennsylvania. This 150 MW facility will remediate an abandoned surface mine while delivering critical energy storage capacity to meet the region's growing power demands. The facility incorporates AES advanced safety specifications—including redundant battery management systems, gas detection, liquid cooling, and direct-injection fire suppression. Construction will create local jobs, generate new tax revenue for schools and essential services, and restore previously unproductive land to its beneficial use.

Our clean energy commitment

We believe in being a good neighbor, developing safe and reliable energy storage that supports grid stability while creating long-term value for the environment and local communities without burdening existing infrastructure

Economic and environmental benefits

The project is expected to generate substantial economic and environmental benefits for local communities and the region.

Project details

  • Sited on approximately 50 acres (with the BESS fenced acreage being around 25-30 acres)
  • Site is separate from and unaffiliated with the adjacent raceway property
  • AES will be the long-term owner and operator of the energy storage facility
  • At the end of the project's life, a decommissioning plan ensures the land can be restored to its previous use or to other uses consistent with land‑use policies in effect at that time.
