Job Family and Group: Transmission and Distribution

Reports to: Director, Engineering

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana

The Manager of Transmission Engineering is responsible for the engineering and design requirement to operate the Company’s transmission facilities safely, reliably and economically by contributing to system construction, troubleshooting, design, performance of preventative maintenance and ensuring compliance requirements are met. Specifically, responsible for all transmission engineering related functions including the design of all parts of transmission system, preparation of specifications, evaluations of proposals, design of physical line layouts, material requirements, and field engineering.                     

Main Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for planning and directing all Transmission Engineering activities to ensure the safe, reliable and economic operation of the Company’s electric transmission system.
  • Assist in the planning, design and construction management of transmission projects.
  • Manage and plan the project work of all the transmission engineers. 
  • Assist engineers in root cause failure analysis to avoid future failures.
  • Assist in maintaining transmission design standards and information systems.
  • Assist in efforts to plan for and maintain transmission material inventory for projects and emergencies.
  • Assist with the restoration efforts due to equipment failures on the transmission system.     
  • Responsible for finding ways to create shareholder value through cost minimization and customer service enhancements.
  • Directly responsible for achieving monthly operating goals focused on reliability, cost management, and safety.
  • Key member of service restoration teams from both planning and operations perspectives.
  • Responsible for performance management employees.
  • Directs the preparation of manpower to economically accomplish engineering plans by incorporating the appropriate internal work force and engineering firm contributions. 
  • Ensures both NERC regulatory compliance for all areas of responsibility.
  • Develop annual O&M and capital budget plan for Transmission Engineering. 
  • Manages and coordinates the interviewing, hiring, and exit planning/termination/discipline of transmission engineering employees. 
  • Assist with managing customer interface for large projects on the transmission system.  Work closely with other AES internal departments and government agencies when planning, routing, and designing transmission lines.  

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering related field from an accredited college/university
  • Candidates must have five to ten (5-10) years work experience that includes increasing responsibilities in electric distribution, substations, and transmission operations. 
  • Experience with leading and managing professional work groups.
