Improving Project Economics of Grid Booster Batteries by Combining Rate-based and Market-based Revenues on Storage as Transmission Assets

Various

Consentec and Fluence

"Grid Booster projects in Germany currently operate only for the reactive instantaneous restoration of network security in case of network contingencies ... Current regulations in Germany, as elsewhere, prohibit the combination of rate-based and market-based revenues. This report outlines potential approaches to enabling this dual-use in a way that is not detrimental to their primary purpose. Allowing dual-use would improve the project economics of SATA and increase its adoption."

Deploy23 Summary

Various

DOE

"This document summarizes the seven Deploy Dialogue session topics  ... The purpose of the event was to build momentum towards deployment of critical clean energy and decarbonization technologies in the U.S. by building trust between leaders across the private and public sectors and broader stakeholder ecosystem."

Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Clean Hydrogen

Various

DOE

"Hydrogen can play a role in decarbonizing up to 25% of global energy-related CO2 emissions, particularly in industrial/chemicals uses and heavy-duty transportation sectors. Combined, incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) can help make clean hydrogen cost-competitive with incumbent technologies in the next 3-5 years for numerous applications."

Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Advanced Geothermal

Various

DOE

"Geothermal power technology has shown compelling advances that can enable it to become a key contributor to secure, domestic, decarbonized power generation for the U.S. as a source of clean firm power ... next-generation geothermal enjoys several starting advantages, including transferrable technology, supply chains, and workforces from the oil & gas sector, that will help it achieve rapid scale."

Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Long Duration Energy Storage

Various

DOE

"Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) is a key option to provide flexibility and reliability in a future decarbonized power system ... This report focuses on those two intermediate duration market segments — inter-day and multi-day / week LDES."

The State of Clean Technology Manufacturing:
An Energy Technology Perspectives Special Briefing – November 2023 Update

Various

IEA

"Clean energy technologies are central to efforts to meet the world’s climate, energy security and economic development goals. Increasing deployment at the pace needed to get on track for net zero emissions by 2050 will require a rapid step-up in manufacturing capacity for clean technologies."

Enabling Principles for Dual Participation by Energy Storage as a Transmission and Market Asset

Various

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

"This paper reviews the technical barriers in transmission planning practices and energy market design that prevent the realization of dual-use energy storage projects, describes the principles that a dual-use project must satisfy to meet both functions, and identifies policy options that abide by those principles ... Where transmission assets are identified through extensive planning processes and subject to regulatory review, competitive energy and ancillary service markets are designed to create comparatively fewer barriers to entry for generation assets. Because of these disparate paths to entry, a dual-use asset would need to be first identified through a transmission plan, and then provide market services on an as-available basis."
