AES' Seguro storage project is a proposed battery energy storage project in north San Diego County, near Escondido, California that will provide a critical, cost-effective source of reliable power to support the region’s electric grid.
By delivering stored power when it is most needed, the Seguro storage project provides flexibility that will be critical to helping the region meet its decarbonization goals and California achieve 100% carbon-free energy by 2045.
1,600 MWh capacity
Enough stored energy to power nearly 300,000 California homes for four hours
Supports electric grid reliability by providing a flexible energy resource
400 megawatts (MW), 1600 megawatt hours (MWh) capacity
Containerized lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS)
22 acres of privately held land site location
Features metal storage containers that will house racks of battery modules equipped with insulation and robust safety monitoring and management systems
Feeds into the nearby existing San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) Escondido Substation
AES will be the long-term owner and operator of the facility
Environmental & economic benefits
Utilizes land near existing electric grid infrastructure to minimize need for new overhead transmission lines
Designed in accordance with the latest applicable codes, safety standards, security, lighting, landscaping and noise requirements
Expected economic benefits include new tax revenue and local jobs during construction and operations
Environmental and technical studies
The project will be reviewed under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Environmental and technical studies for the project will include a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, hydrology, geotechnical, cultural resources, land, topography, biological, wetlands, economic impact and other studies. AES will work with the relevant government and regulatory agencies to mitigate potential environmental impacts from the project.
AES is committed to being a good neighbor and partner to the communities where our projects are located. This includes informing and engaging project stakeholders and the public throughout all phases of the project. AES also supports local contractors, community organizations and programs.
