Paul Freedman

Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

Paul leads our global legal team, serves as a principal advisor to the AES board and oversees our Ethics and Compliance and federal government affairs functions. He also serves on several leadership team committees with responsibility for the Company’s strategy, investment decisions, AI deployment, new technology incubation and workplace transformation.

Paul has advanced numerous initiatives to position AES as a leader in the energy transition, including multiple partnerships and transactions to accelerate execution of the Company’s strategy and the scaling of new technologies. He also led the team that produced the Company’s industry-leading Climate Scenario Reports.

Prior to assuming his current role in 2018, he previously served as Chief of Staff to the CEO and in several positions in AES’ Legal group, working on M&A, partnerships and joint ventures, project development, regulatory matters and corporate governance.

Currently, Paul serves on the Boards of our US utility businesses. He also serves on the boards of the Business Council for International Understanding and the Coalition for Integrity, organizations that promote global economic cooperation and combat corruption, respectively. Since 2006, he has partnered with the International Law Institute as a course advisor and lecturer, training government officials from developing countries on Capital Markets Development and Regulation.

Prior to AES, Paul spent five years as the chief legal advisor of the US Agency for International Development’s worldwide credit guaranty program. He began his career working as a project finance lawyer at the law firms of White & Case and Freshfields.

Paul earned his bachelor’s degree at Columbia University and JD at the Georgetown University Law Center. In his free time, Paul loves traveling with his wife and two daughters and has a lifelong passion for tennis.
