AES Bulgaria

Bringing energy to Bulgaria

AES Bulgaria is focused on power generation and ensuring the security of the energy supply in Bulgaria by providing vital services for the power grid. We operate the 156 MW St. Nikola Wind Park — the largest wind park in the country. AES Bulgaria is a leader in wind power and is actively working towards a more sustainable energy future for Bulgaria. We also operate a 690 MW thermal power plant in the town of Galabovo.

Building partnerships to strengthen communities

We believe in being a good neighbor. For the last 15 years, AES Bulgaria has supported various socially significant projects that amount to an investment of more than USD 8 million (BGN 15 million). We get involved in solving local problems with our own resources, whether it’s building transportation infrastructure, combating floods, repair social institutions and schools.

Local impact

We are all in need of more sustainable solutions to power our lives and our world. Strong partnerships allow us to work together to integrate innovative energy solutions, develop positive social impact programs, and create long-term value within the communities.

AES TPP in Galabovo spearheaded a comprehensive renovation project, completely revitalizing the local Youth Center. The project included the refurbishment of the existing building and the construction of new sports and recreational facilities.
Landscaping and improvements to the surrounding grounds transformed the center into a beautiful park. Today, the Youth Center is the most modern sports and cultural hub in the region, featuring a large sports hall, rooms for folk dancing and rhythmic gymnastics, a computer lab, indoor and outdoor fitness areas, a playground, and a covered outdoor concert stage.

Since it began operating, the AES TPP in Galabovo has been providing school supplies to local first-graders as part of AES Bulgaria's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. Educational support is a top priority for AES Bulgaria's CSR initiatives, which aim to encourage the development of young people in the region. The program stimulates their curiosity and skills while boosting their confidence and self-esteem. Over the past 16 years, AES Bulgaria has donated school bags filled with supplies to more than 1,600 first-graders in the Bulgarian Municipality of Galabovo.

In 2022, AES Geo Energy, the company that owns and operates Bulgaria's largest wind farm, "St. Nikola," entered into a partnership agreement with the Technical University of Varna. The two organizations are collaborating to provide technical training for students pursuing a degree in Renewable Energy. The program curriculum includes practical training, internships, educational visits to the wind farm, and opportunities for experimental work for students at all levels. AES Geo Energy also offers scholarships and covers tuition fees to support students in the program.
