Energy storage technology

At AES, we are proud to be a pioneer and global leader in battery energy storage systems (BESS), collaborating with partners worldwide to deploy award-winning battery systems that enhance grid reliability, flexibility and resiliency. We developed the world’s first utility-scale lithium-ion BESS and in 2009 installed the first commercial aplication of this technology, in Chile.

Energy storage benefits

Battery energy storage improves grid reliability by supporting thermal and renewable generation and alleviating transmission constraints. It increases system resiliency in the face of unpredictable and unexpected situations. Energy storage is also used to reduce energy costs by charging batteries when power prices are low and discharging them when prices rise.
