Together with Kaua’I Island Utility Cooperative
A small island leading a big transition
Kaua’i has an ambitious renewables mandate. Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) made history with AES by inaugurating the Lāwa’i Solar and Energy Storage Project, creating a new model for delivering large-scale renewable energy. The first of-its-kind DC-coupled solution, dubbed “The PV Peaker Plant” delivers reliable, readily dispatchable carbon free power through the world’s largest operational solar-plus-storage system.
The PV Peaker Plant serves as a blueprint on how to provide flexible, renewable generation in markets struggling with increasing cost-effective renewables penetration that not only deliver firm, renewable energy, but also modernize the grid.
- Providing 11% of Kaua’i’s total power consumption
- Offsetting 3.7M gallons of diesel annually
- 2019 EEI Award Winner
- Kaua’I operates on 100% renewables throughout the day
“Now that the Lāwa’i project is online, as much as 40% of our evening peak power will be supplied by stored solar energy. I think it’s safe to say this is a unique achievement in the nation and possibly the world. Replacing fossil fuels with stable, lower-priced renewables helps us keep rates as low as possible for our members.”

Together with Microsoft
A tech giant with giant renewable goals
Microsoft partnered with sPower for 300-megawatts of solar energy to further their journey to be carbon negative by 2030. Pleinmont Solar I and II are part of the 485-megawatt Spotsylvania Solar Energy Center in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Pleinmont Solar I and II will produce approximately 715,000 MWh of solar energy each year, offsetting more than 500,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
- Part of what will be the country’s fifth-largest solar farm
- Helping Virginia meet its 100 percent clean energy standard
- Creating more than 700 temporary construction jobs and 20-30 full-time employment positions
“The commercial operation of Pleinmont Solar I is a significant milestone on our journey to have 100 percent renewable energy supply for all our operations, including our datacenters, by 2025 and accrues to our commitment to be carbon negative as a company by 2030. The project will not only support our sustainability goals, but also provide new employment opportunities through the site’s construction and ongoing operations.”
