Our ability to provide a steady supply of electricity to our customers at any given time requires our businesses to employ modern technologies for power delivery and monitoring system reliability. It also requires a deep understanding of our service areas and customer base.
Efficiency in Generation
We provide diverse fuel technologies that are well-suited to the individual markets in which we operate. Our power plants generate electricity from diverse fuel sources, including coal, diesel, gas, oil, pet coke and renewables. This electricity is sold to utilities, wholesalers and commercial buyers under long-term contracts and in competitive markets.
Our generation businesses help energy markets meet their existing and growing electricity supply needs. We have assisted with the construction of new state-of-the-art power plants, and we have applied advanced fuel combustion technologies at existing power plants to maximize capacity and optimize availability.
We established a system of KPIs to monitor our generation businesses which includes Equivalent Availability Factor (EAF), Net Capacity Factor (NCF), Commercial Availability and Equivalent Forced Outage Factor (EFOF).

Reliability in Distribution and Access to Electricity
Our utilities deliver reliable and affordable electricity to approximately 10+ million customers. Our eight distribution companies power major cities from São Paulo, Brazil to Indianapolis, IN, and we expanded electricity access to first-time customers in Brazil and El Salvador—improving lives with affordable energy sources. We continually seek to modernize distribution networks to transmit power efficiently and safely in markets around the world.
Our ability to provide a steady supply of electricity to our customers at any given time requires our businesses to employ modern technologies for power delivery and monitoring system reliability. We track the reliability of our distribution networks by average frequency (SAIFI) and duration of system interruptions (SAIDI) per customer, weighted based on ownership adjusted EBITDA. In addition, we set corporate targets for customer satisfaction.
We are dedicated to improving the lives of the people in the areas we serve and continually look for new technology developments to help us provide safe, environmentally friendly energy sources. Some of our distribution businesses have led efforts in developing smart grid technology as well as solutions to provide electricity for the first time to low income families. We provided electricity for the first time to more than one million people globally over the past decade, and we also normalized electrical service for over 2.6 million people in Brazilian favelas.
