Biodiversity

Protecting and encouraging biodiversity helps boost ecosystems and keep them healthy so all forms of life can thrive. We operate in accordance with all applicable local laws or regulations regarding biodiversity issues. Biodiversity matters for our operating business and construction project sites are addressed under the AES Environmental Management System (EMS) framework which builds on the four principles of the AES Environmental Policy.

Our EMS framework encompasses all aspects of environmental risk management, including biodiversity risk management, and uses our environmental Aspects and Impacts Assessment (AIA) tool to identify biodiversity risks during major operational changes as well as during periodic site audits. The EMS framework process outlines how significant environmental risks, including biodiversity risks, must be addressed under the EMS process.

The main purpose of the AES Biodiversity Assessment and Protection standard is to ensure our businesses identify, assess, and document biodiversity impacts for each project prior to engaging in any project activities and then to act so as to avoid or, if avoidance is not possible, to minimize negative biodiversity impacts and to promote positive biodiversity impacts. The standard provides additional AIA assessment guidance to our businesses on biodiversity risks, including avoidance of direct impacts to World Heritage areas and IUCN Category I-IV protected areas.

For construction projects, including site selection, we assess and mitigate biodiversity risks during the pre-construction permitting and environmental impact assessment phases of the project. This is, in addition to applying our AES EMS framework.
