Because of our presence in the Middle East and experience building large power construction projects, AES was selected in 2003 to develop Oman’s first independent water and power plant: AES Barka. AES Barka is a 456 MW combined cycle gas turbine power and water desalination facility located on the coast, northwest of Muscat—the capital city of Oman.

Today, we provide over 15% of Oman’s peak system capacity and more than 30% of the country’s installed water capacity—reliably and safely. After only two years of operation, the plant has achieved top decile operational performance in both water and power measures, and customers have enjoyed commercial availability rates of over 99%. In 2006, AES Barka was ranked twelfth out of all the publicly traded companies in Oman by the prestigious Omani Business Review, in recognition of the company's superior quality of performance in all areas of the business.
