AES Ebute is a natural gas-fired generation plant consisting of 9 power barges near Ijede, a fishing village 60 kilometers from Lagos. The plant was originally constructed as an emergency power station in 2000 and was acquired by AES in June 2001. Today, AES Ebute generates approximately 8% of Nigeria’s electricity.
AES is one of the largest employers in the community. In addition to providing permanent and temporary jobs, AES has supported the community in other ways. AES Ebute has provided furniture for schools, new fishing nets to the local village and job training to local people. In 2006, the AES Ebute Power Station formed a Social Responsibility Task Force to find ways to further improve its relationship with the local community. As a result, the plant now targets four key areas through local community programs it runs: an Apprenticeship Program to help bridge the technical skills gap of the local workforce; a Medical Clinic, to provide much-needed local medical care; and a Scholarship Program to help those less fortunate to be able to attend school.
