AES built, owns and operates AES Kelanitissa, a diesel-fired 168 MW power plant that satisfies 10% of Sri Lanka’s energy consumption needs. Located in the capital city Colombo, the plant serves the area via the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), a utility company owned by the government of Sri Lanka.
In February 2005, AES responded to the tsunami crisis in Asia by activating the AES Disaster Relief Fund, collecting donations from AES people around the world and directing resources to the local community in Sri Lanka. The team worked with the local community to target the funds where they were needed most. The AES Disaster Relief Fund provided almost $300,000 in donations to the region, a part of which funded the reconstruction and restoration of three healthcare dispensaries near the city of Galle, in the southern part of Sri Lanka.
