AES was the first American power company to enter China in the early 1990s. Today, AES remains one of the few foreign players in the power sector to stay and continue to contribute to the growing Chinese economy. Our subsidiary in China, AES Chigen, has seven operating plants located in six different provinces and municipalities, in addition to offices in Beijing and Hong Kong.
AES Chigen’s diverse operations include gas-fired, oil-fired, hydroelectric and four coal-fired plants. One of these plants, Aixi, utilizes circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology in China, providing a cleaner way to burn coal to generate power. The 2,100 MW Yangcheng power plant is the country’s first “coal by wire” power plant. Located near abundant coal reserves, Yangcheng provides eastern China with critically needed power over a 755 kilometer transmission line.
Committed to improving lives in their surrounding communities, AES people at Chigen have made donations to local primary and middle schools and have funded scholarships for university students. They have also provided financial assistance for a number of local community projects, including the construction of roadway lighting, a police station, a flood control dam, a railway line and a pipeline to bring fresh water to a neighboring village.
