AES Gener is the largest thermal generator and second largest generator of electricity in Chile. The company owns and operates a diverse mix of power plants, including those that can operate on coal, gas, diesel, biomass and water, and provides electricity to the northern and central part of the country—where over 90% of the population lives. In northern Chile, the company provides power principally to mining companies located in the Atacama desert region, also known as the driest place on Earth.
Chile has one of the highest GDP per capita rates in Latin America, as well as a growing appetite for energy. To meet this growing demand, AES Gener has installed six plants since 2007, adding 859 MW of new capacity, and is currently constructing three additional generation facilities, Angamos I and II, two 259 MW coal-fired units, and Campiche a 270 MW coal-fired plant. These facilities provide much needed generation capacity to help meet the increasing demand for electricity. These plants will also help diversify the Chilean energy sector which has been heavily dependent on hydroelectric and gas/diesel-fired generation.
AES Gener also distributes coal in Chile and is engaged in natural gas transportation in Chile and Argentina.
AES Gener also sponsors innovative education programs that have gained wide recognition. Its Friends of Science program, cited by the Secretary General of the United Nations as an exemplary program, has benefited nearly 50,000 students since the program began.
AES Gener primarily generates and sells electrical energy in Chile, but it also is engaged (directly or through equity investments) in electricity generation in Colombia and Argentina. AES Gener owns and operates AES Chivor, a 1,000 MW hydroelectric plant in Colombia that is the third largest such plant in that country. AES Gener’s TermoAndes generation facility is located in northern Argentina and currently supplies electricity to both Chile and Argentina.
AES Gener: Improving education across Chile AES Gener has made longstanding contributions to improving education in Chile, especially in areas in which AES Gener facilities are located, where many schools struggle with limited resources.
