From the metropolis of São Paolo to Porto Alegre, from the borders of Argentina and Uruguay, AES powers daily life across more than 100,000 square kilometers of service territory in Brazil, the largest country in Latin America.
AES Eletropaulo is an integrated utility that serves the São Paulo metropolitan area. With more than five million customers, it is the largest electricity distribution company in Latin America. AES also owns and operates AES Sul, a utility that distributes electricity to more than one million customers in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.
In addition to its distribution businesses, AES owns and operates two generation companies in Brazil. AES Tietê, comprised of 10 hydroelectric power plants with a total of 2,651 MW of installed capacity, represents approximately 21% of the total generation capacity in the state of São Paulo. The ninth largest generator in Brazil, AES Tietê supplies 100% of its energy to AES Eletropaulo under a long-term contract.
AES’s 639 MW Uruguaiana plant, which began operation in 2000, was the first large-scale generation project in Brazil to utilize natural gas for fuel on a large scale. Today, Uruguaiana represents approximately 10% of the installed capacity of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
AES businesses in Brazil conduct numerous social programs throughout their service areas. AES Brazil's flagship project is the House of Culture and Citizenship. The program transforms the lives of people through various educational activities associated with art, culture, citizenship, and quality of life. More than 5,200 children and adolescents benefit from the cultural and sports activities, while approximately 1,500 young people and adults benefit from the financial workshops and vocational courses.
