At AES, we provide diverse fuel technologies that are well-suited to the individual markets in which we operate. Our businesses share expertise in building and operating plants that use coal, diesel, hydropower, gas, oil, wind and biomass to generate electricity.

AES Generation Highlights

  • AES Gener in Chile generates more than 5,000 MW of coal, gas and hydro. AES Gener won POWER magazine’s 2012 Power Plant of the Year for Angamos.
  • AES owns and operates US generation plants in California at Los Alamitos, Huntington Beach and Redondo Beach, using natural gas. 
  • Maritza, a 670 MW lignite-fired plant and state-of-the-art ash disposal facility in Bulgaria.
  • Ballylumford is Northern Ireland's largest power station and provides 1,246 MW of power, more than half of the province's power supply. 
  • Laurel Mountain is a wind plant comprising of 98 MW of wind generation and 32 MW of integrated battery-based energy storage located in West Virginia. The plant supplies more than 260,000 MWh of renewable energy annually. Laurel Mountain won the 2012 Renewable Energy World Wind Project of the Year Award.
  • In the Philippines, Masinloc was awarded the 2011 EEI Award. As a result of capital investment and operational improvements, AES Philippines increased Masinloc’s capacity from 450 MW to 630 MW, improved availability from 50 percent to 74 percent and increased net production by 62 percent within two years.
  • Dominican Republic: AES Dominicana is the largest privately owned generating company and owns the only port that receives liquefied natural gas (LNG).
  • Drone Hill is a 29 MW wind farm in Berwickshire, Scotland, and was commissioned in August 2012.
  • AES Tietê in Brazil generates over 2,600 MW of hydro in the state of São Paulo.
  • Nigeria: AES Ebute is the third-largest independent power producer in the country.
  • Silver Ridge Power, established in 2008 as a joint venture between The AES Corporation and Riverstone Holdings LLC, develops, finances, constructs, owns and operates utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) projects globally.
  • AES Energy Storage is the owner-operator of advanced storage projects that provide stored energy to power grids at optimal times to improve grid performance and reliability. AES Energy Storage projects combine patented software, dynamic power control and advanced storage technology.

Upcoming Generation Highlights

  • Alto Maipo: AES has completed financing and will begin construction on two hydroelectric plants at Alto Maipo - Alfalfal II and Las Lajas. Located in Chile’s central Santiago region, the project will have 17 km of new transmission lines and will contribute 531 MW to Chile’s electricity system. The project will be operational in 2018.   • Mong Duong is a 1,240 MW coal-fired power plant in Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam, due to be commissioned in 2015.
